In storeYesSafeway says you swipe or insert your EBT card and enter your PIN at the register. SNAP pays for eligible items, and the rest goes on a second payment method such as cash, credit or debit. Your remaining SNAP balance prints on the receipt.[1]
OnlineYesSafeway takes SNAP EBT for online orders on its website and app, for both delivery and Drive Up & Go pickup wherever Safeway offers those services. You add your card at checkout, choose how much SNAP to apply, and add a backup payment method for non-eligible items and fees. Whether EBT Cash works online depends on your state.[1]
PickupYesSafeway says SNAP EBT works for Drive Up & Go pickup orders wherever the service is offered.[1]
DeliveryPartlySNAP EBT can pay for eligible food on delivery orders. It cannot pay delivery fees, service fees or tips, which go on your backup payment method. Safeway says this is a federal rule.[1]

Hot prepared foodNoSafeway says hot food sold ready to eat, such as rotisserie chicken from the warmer, hot soup or hot coffee, is not SNAP-eligible. Cold prepared items such as pre-made sandwiches are eligible.[1]

Good to know

  • For items sold by weight, such as produce, Safeway temporarily adds a 10% surcharge to the EBT charge at checkout, and any overage is refunded to the card after weighing. WIC works in store only, not online. Safeway is part of Albertsons Companies, which runs its own page on online SNAP EBT at safeway.com/EBTonline. [1]
